Many of you have been asking me about how to protect yourself from COVID-19. The key is to minimize transmission. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Hand washing plays an important part in that, as well as physical distancing. The second key is to optimize your immune system. Vitamin D3, Zinc, Vitamin C and antioxidants are big players here. Analyses have shown that the elderly are at the highest risk of dying from this disease. Interestingly as we get older, our melatonin levels decline significantly. Melatonin is an immunemodulator and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. In addition it has an excellent safety profile, even at one gram per day for a month. Thus, I recommend supplementing with melatonin 90 minutes before bedtime starting at 1 milligram and working up to 10 milligrams as tolerated. In addition I recommend avoiding any NSAIDs such as Ibuprofen and Aleve, as these have been shown to increase the risk of pulmonary edema in COVID-19 patients. Antioxidants such as Vitamin C, Quercetin, Propolis and PQQ may also be helpful. Even though Glutathione is an excellent antioxidant it is also a major detoxifier and can exacerbate detoxification symptoms and this is not a priority right now. It goes without saying that a diet robust in colorful vegetables and fruits is essential, offering natural antioxidants and phytonutrients such as flavonoids. Avoid alcohol, drink half your weight in ounces of purified water a day, get 8-10 hours of sleep a night and 10,000 steps outside every day. Don't forget a positive outlook and laughter.
